At the heart of Tuamotu culture and nature
With 78 islands scattered over an oceanic space of 1.2 million square kilometers, the Tuamotu Archipelago is the most vast in French Polynesia. From the 15th to the 17th of May 2009, at the Maison de la culture, permanent workshops, slide shows and demonstrations helped nearly 5,000 visitors learn about the Tuamotu language and culture. Culinary preparations, traditional oratory arts and games as well as the native medicines of the archipelago were uncovered during this highly anticipated 5th festival organized by the Te Reo o te Tuamotu association and supported by Air Tahiti.

The Rangiroa Ariimatatini Race
On the 8th and the 9th of May 2009, Rangiroa atoll in the Tuamotus hosted the Ariimatatini Race, a Polynesian outrigger canoeing competition. For this 7th edition over 60 va’a hoe (one-man) rowers met for the against-the-clock 4-kilometer (two and a half mile) race and then a 24-kilometer (15-mile) marathon course. The female winner was Heleani Vairaaroa. For the men, junior Rete Ebb won both sections of the race. Numerous cultural challenges were held concurrently with the canoe race: javelin throwing, fishing competitions, copra preparation and more. As a faithful backer of va’a (outrigger canoe) racing, the king of Polynesian sports, Air Tahiti gave its support to this prestigious competition.
